    Aboriginal Education and Training Strategy

    The Aboriginal Education and Training Strategy is an initiative to increase access for aboriginal students in Ontario’s universities and colleges. Through support received under the Strategy, aboriginal academic programs and content across the curriculum were designed, developed and implemented, to increase enrolment, retention and completion rates of Aboriginal students studying in the mainstream. As part of this initiative, a culturally sensitive environment for Aboriginal students was enhanced at Lakehead. Culturally relevant academic and support services programs have increased in the past six years as has the total number of Aboriginal faculty and staff working within the institution.
    Akwe:kon Residence Hall at Cornell University
       
    Akwe:kon, (pronounced ''a-gway'-go'') is the first university residence of its kind in the country purposely built to celebrate American Indian heritage. In the Mohawk language, Akwe:kon means ''all of us.'' The spirit of this Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) word is reflected in the inclusiveness that Akwe:kon offers to its residents and the community. Students from all backgrounds live in the house and experience a range of activities that reflect the philosophies and heritage of many Native cultures of North America and emphasize American Indian values, ideas, and traditions.

It was founded in 1972 by the presidents of the nation’s first six Tribal Colleges, as an informal collaboration among member colleges. Today, AIHEC has grown to represent 32 colleges in the United States and one Canadian institution. Unlike most professional associations, it is governed jointly by each member institution.
